MEDICAL CONDITIONS CTO TREATS ON SURGICAL MISSIONS

  • ANORECTAL MALFORMATIONS

    • ranges from mild to complex and develop differently in males and females.

    • Occurs when the anus, rectum, or associated nerves do not develop properly which results in the patient being unable to perform normal bowel movements

    • Anorectal malformations come in many forms, including an anal opening in the wrong location or one that is too small and the absence of an anal opening.

    • Can lead to bowel obstructions and chronic infections of the bladder or vagina.

  • CLOACAL MALFORMATIONS

    • A anorectal condition in newborn girls where the rectum, vagina and urinary tract are adjoined to form one opening

    • Can lead to many complications such as urine reflux into the kidneys, hydrocolpos, and other extensive issues with functions of the reproductive organs

    • Cloacal exstrophy is one of the most severe cloacal malformations where several organs are exposed including the bladder or large intestine.

  • CHRONIC CONSTIPATION

    • Also referred to as idiopathic or functional constipation

    • Long-lasting constipation caused by underlying medical conditions, a deficiency in fiber, or other factors

    • Characterized by chronical abdominal pain, decreased appetitive, abnormally few bowel movements, painful bowel movements, and incomplete evacuation.

    • Can lead to serious issues such as fecal incontinence or problems with motility.

  • URINARY & FECAL INCONTINENCE

    • occurs when the urge to use the bathroom is ignored such that the stool becomes hard and backs up into the rectum resulting in the overfilling and stretching of the rectum.

    • The condition can become so severe that it interferes with the ability to feel the urge to go, causing overflow incontinence.

    • certain congenital diseases related to the spine can interfere with bowel and urologic function including Spinal Bifida and Myelomegingocele

  • HIRSCHSPRUNG DISEASE

    • a congenital condition that occurs when a lack of nerve cells in the lining of the colon do not develop in a fetus early on in pregnancy.

    • Hirschsprung disease results in a blockage of the intestine, severe constipation and a host of other health problems.

    • severity of the condition depends on how much of the large intestine has been affected.

Educational Books on Colorectal Malformations and Surgeries

  • Pediatric Colorectal and Pelvic Surgery

This new handbook teaches and explains the key principles in the management of complex pediatric colorectal diagnoses.

  • Pediatric Colorectal and Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery

This book provides comprehensive coverage of the anatomical and physiological aspects of complex colorectal and pelvic malformations.

  • Fecal Incontinence and Constipation in Children

This book focuses on the management of children with fecal incontinence and constipation. Despite accurate anatomic reconstruction, many children still suffer from a variety of functional bowel problems.
